ORCA Winners Q&A

Ashwin Gopal, Karl Fleet & Tim Yates (Colenso BBDO)

We talk to the winning trio to find out a little more about what gets their creative juices flowing. Apparently it's all down to Woody's and Strippers... sounds like a dangerous combination to us!

Hi Guys, tell us how you came up with the idea that won this month’s ORCA?

The idea came from the show. The client wanted to push the relationship side of Outrageous Fortune. Once you write down their relationships, it makes an awesome story and from there it kinda wrote itself. But to get into the Westie mindset a few Woody's had to be consumed.

What is your approach to writing a great radio commercial?

Keep it simple. Stay true to the idea.

What makes a great radio ad for you?

Radio ads that are funny and pull you in - either using a simple idea or crafting a great story.

Any pet peeves when it comes to radio commercials?

When people use talent that sounds like talent.

So where do you like to produce your radio? And why?

On a Friday afternoon, it has to be Images and Sound as they have strippers. . . .Ok they don’t, but the more I say they do the more likely it’ll happen one day.

How do you find your talent?

Listening to voice CD’s. First find the voice you want in your head, then search for it

Any hot production tips you’ve picked up?

Have fun, if you’re cracking up laughing making the ad, fingers crossed it’ll sound funny on radio.

Thanks guys - love the photo by the way!
